7. Example system: Bank

Let us describe an organisation we call a bank, then consider this organisation as a system made up of three resources. Namely, Human, Technological, Accommodation.

The analysis below show how the bank company can be split up into its

Human

The people involved in this organisation include

  • Tellers, that run the bank desks at each branch of the company
  • Advisers, who inform customers of their products and service as well as dealing with customer enquiries
  • IT staff that maintain and develop their IT / financial systems
  • Security staff. To keep financial resources safe
  • Management. To ensure that staff are capable of their roles and have the support they need
  • Finance managers. To ensure that the bank is profitable and in control of its finances
Technological

Banks make heavy use of IT and other computer related equipment. They also have very advanced security systems in place.

Technology includes

  • IT systems to manage the flow of finance and to keep accounts
  • Security systems. Such as CCTV within the branch
  • ATMs (cashpoints) for customer use. These are not only in-branch but also dotted around the country

Accommodation

A bank has many branches around the country or even the world. They also have a headquarters. They do not have factories as they are part of the service industry rather than the manufacturing sector.

Accommodation include

  • Retail branches dotted around towns and cities
  • Headquarters for central staff
  • Parts of other buildings to accommodate cash points
  • Data centres to hold their main computing systems
