2. What is an system

A system in one which is made up of two or more entities. These entities interact with one another and together they form an integrated whole. The system interacts with its environment by inputs and outputs.

This is easier to explain as a diagram as shown below

This shows that all systems have a number of properties that include

  • A system has a border (physical or conceptual) to indicate separation from its environment
  • It has two or more entities contained within its border
  • The entities interact with one another in some way. They have a relationship of some kind.
  • The system interacts with its environment in the form of some kind of inputs (physical or conceptual), it does something with those inputs (processing) and eventually has output of some kind (physical or conceptual).
