3. Pros and cons of self guided learning

Advantage of standalone learning
Disadvantages of standalone learning

Student can learn the material at their own pace.

Licence may only allow it to be installed on a single computer so access for more than one person is restricted

Student can stop and start at any point

Computer is tied up for the duration of the course. May be inconvenient for other family members or co-workers

Single use licence is cheaper than a networked or online licence. So may be the cheaper option depending on the number of intended users

Computer needs to placed at an accessible location for every intended user. For instance if it is at work, then it can't be at someone's desk or office, it needs to be in a communal area.

If it is at home, then other activities may hamper learning for example the computer is in the living room and others want to watch the television whilst you are trying to use the course

Can choose the course appropriate to their level - beginner, intermediate, advanced.

No feedback from a real teacher \ tutor

Excellent as a support for personal \ professional development.

No formal tracking of progress

Needs only a standard personal computer to run the course

Student needs to be self-motivated and so may abandon the course part way through

Material is fixed and so material may become out of date.

No interaction with other students to help each other learn the material

Course may be too simple or too advanced for all intended users.
