7. Television outside broadcasts

The previous page described the 'retail' side of satellite tv, where customers view the finished programmes directly.

Another form of television broadcast that is not seen by customers, are private 'tv feeds'. For example journalists may be covering

  • News from a war zone
  • Natural disaster.
  • Sport event
  • Important social event

In order to send the report from the field back to headquarters, they can use an 'outside broadcast' satellite feed.

 

The news package is transmitted via satellite and then edited at headquarters before being broadcast over the retail channels.

Quite often a specialist outside broadcast company runs the equipment at the event, then TV companies pay to have their particular journalist use the feed.
