6. Encryption

The second area of controversy surrounding the RIPA is where an individual or a company has encrypted files in order to keep them secure. 

The Act can be used to force the individual to surrender the encryption keys (digital numbers which allow users to decipher encoded data) or to present the data in a readable format. 

If they refuse they can face up to two years in prison.
