3. Threat to privacy?

When the Act was originally passed in 2000 only nine organisations such as MI5 and the police were allowed to invoke the ability to intercept and monitor our electronic communications.  However by 2008 the number of organisations has risen to almost 1,000.


There are a number of people who regard the RIPA regulations as excessive and a threat to privacy and civil liberties in the UK.  They are becoming increasingly concerned that the RIPA is being used to monitor things that were not within the original remit of the Act.
