2. Characters

Characters are shapes which are used to create text, numbers and symbols on the screen, page, publication etc. They are a a fundamental part of most documents.

Characters are grouped together to form 'character sets'. These look different from one another by how heavy, light, curly etc each character appears.

For instance 'Arial' character set looks quite different to 'Broadway. There are thousands of character sets available.

Selecting the right character set for the document will determine how it looks overall.

The standard alphabetic character sets are made up of lower case and upper case letters of the chosen language along with punctuation marks and other special characters such as the 'c in a circle' copyright notice
