A Microsoft Windows graphics technology. Direct X is a software layer within the operating system, also called an Application Programming Interface or API.

Direct X gives graphics and sound cards direct access to the computers's hardware and so by-passes much of the overhead that Windows introduces. In practical terms Direct X allows advanced games to run as fast as possible.

There have been many generations of Direct X. The current one is DirectX 10. each one adds more capabilities than the one before.
