6. Keeping track of stock

We have mentioned that the stock control system is basically a database. But you need to have a method of recording items being sold and new stock coming in.

Barcodes

The most popular method is to use a barcode attached to the item. At the till, a barcode reader bar codeidentifies the item, and makes a record of the sale.

As new stock comes into the stock room, a barcode is read off the delivery box along with the quantity of items in the box. This is again read by a barcode reader and is input into the database.

RFID tags

Another popular method of keeping track of stock is to use RFID tags (Radio Frequency Identification Tags) attached in some way to the item.

Example: a modern library

There are now automatic kiosks to be found in a modern library where you simply place all your books in the tray within the machine. The machine identifies every book in the tray automatically. You then use a touch screen to indicate if you are borrowing or returning the books.

The library stock levels are automatically updated. It works because an RFID tag has been glued into the book cover. This provides a unique identity for every book.
