Splash screen

A web term

.
A splash screen is a page usually with some kind of Flash animation that you see before entering the main site. They usually have a link (thankfully) such as 'skip intro'.

In the early days of Flash technology it tended to have no purpose other than a place to show off the web designers' flash skills, so the splash screen came to have a poor image as a hinderance to getting to the actual purpose of the visited site.

These days splash screen are not so popular for that reason but you do come across them on personal sites or marketing sites. They all at least seem to provide a skip intro link to get to where you want to be going.
