Sound File

Just like the visible world can be recorded in the form of video and image files. Sound can also be recorded and stored as data in a file.

Exactly how the file is formatted depends on the method of capturing and encoding the sound in the first place.

For example a .WAV file is an uncompressed sound file that has the advantage of being able to be played back with most media players. But they do tend to be very large.

An alternative is to compress the sound data using the MPEG 1 Layer 3 method otherwise known as 'mp3'.

There are many other sound file formats available.
