Smart Home

The idea of the 'smart home' has been around since electronics began to be used in the home back in the 1950's.

Television programs of that time would forecast that our homes would become stress-free, labour free havens thanks to robotic servants and automated kitchens and the like.

Things have not quite worked out that way, but you can certainly make a home 'smart' with the right technology. For example, you wear an RFID tag that lets the home computer know where you are in the house. So when you enter an empty room, the lights come on, perhaps your favourite music turns on, the curtains are drawn; and when the room is empty, the lights are automatically switched off and perhaps the heating turned down a bit, so saving energy.

A smart home makes use of the latest technology to adapt itself to suit its occupants.
