Codec

There are two halves to this. 'Encode' and 'Decode'.

You 'encode' data by applying a set of rules to convert it to another form.

For example, there is an ASCII standard to 'encode' letters of the alphabet into a set of binary numbers.

On the other hand, there is a set of rules to 'decode' these binary numbers back into alphabet letters.

The purpose of Encoding and Decoding is to allow the information to be transmitted in a convenient form. For example, video signals are 'encoded' and 'decoded' using some standard protocol. These protocols are called 'CODECS' which is a short word for COde-DECode

There are many codecs and you must have the right one installed on your computer in order to view the video.
