A secondary school in Doncaster is trying out a scheme where microchips (RFID tags) are sewn into students’ school uniform e.g. badges or blazers. 

The chip sends out a radio signal that gets picked up as the students pass scanners located around the school. 

This allows teachers to instantly check whether students are at school and quickly inform parents if their children are missing.  Parents have peace of mind knowing their children are safe and the school can keep track of students who are missing lessons.

Despite there being many benefits of such a system, some people feel that this is going a step too far and invading students’ right to personal privacy.

It is alright putting these tags in School Uniform BUT what happens to those that turn up NOT wearing ithe uniform? Are they sent home, given a spare tag for the day OR put against a wall and shot !!! Looking at the spelling of some of the comments above.... looks like they are from the ones that really want to stay in school and get some edukayshun.

If teachers want us to be safe then we should APPRECCIATE it rather than hesitate and create sensless arguments. Teachers do the best for us so we should not neglect and deprive from what they do. I think it is a great idea to keep us safe but the only thing I would hesitate is what if it thrown into the wash. There are thousands of reasons of it but overall it is a great idea to keep us safe and attendant.

Peronally I dont know what all the fuss is about. I mean, surley the children who behave have nothing to worry about, only the scivers. I must admit that it does seem like a wast of technology and money but really, its not that bad.

To be perfectly honest, it doesn't seem like a breach of our privacy to me. I mean, sure teachers will know where we are but the tags are not cameras, they can't see what we are doing. And I hardly think that the government has breached our privacy much recently. In fact, this could become interesting, very interesting

I think that it is a good idea if you want to be able to keep a track on the pupils wherabouts, but at the same time it just show's the lack of control teachers and the school itself have over pupils these days. It could be seen as going a step to far and not all parents may see it the same way as that school do!!

I think its an inspiring idea to be honest, people who are truent should be punished. however, shouldn't the teachers know if the students are at school or not by the fact they have gone to registration? I would not want to wear a microchip, on the other hand, i believe these 'Chips' Should be given to children who are on punctuality reports or attendance reports. as this would be a fair punishment. I am actually a student. and i believe that punishments for missing lessons perposly is right, however they may have a reason for doing so.. But as i said at the begining of this long 'essay' of a comment, i believe this is a good idea!

I think its a great idea, however i would not be willing to wear one myself and sometimes the views of the student are not taken into account in favour of an idealistic scenario where children are forced to behave perfectly and not truent school

If think it is a good idea because if people are skipping lessons the teachers can find out where the student is. However the teachers can just put up CCTV and watch the students from the CCTV because with the RIFD tags the teachers watch every step you take and thats too cautious!

well my school was planning on using this as our school is set for a complete revamp and i believe it would be a good idea as long as it stayed in the school the problem comes when other people start to track these chips and anyways we are already in a big brother society

I think that they're a good idea because if anything was to happen to you, then your school,your parents and the police would know where you were and at what time. They will keep you safe and prevent students from skipping lessons and wandering around the school during lesson time

If someone knew you were missing from a lesson much quicker then if something had happened to you then the police would be able to trace you and find you so if you were in some kind of trouble they could help yu out. I think this would be worth it cos Id feel much safer if I could get help if I needed it.

Hmm, this RFID 'baby' is interesting. Well, in my opinion, these Microchips are a great tool to keep track of students. It will certainly help to keep us safe. Say if you have got your Microchip beside your blazer then indeed you would feel comfortable that someone has got an eye to make sure whether you're safe. Their main purpose is to keep us safe. They are doing this for us. As a result, we should appreciate and be humbled by this. It will certainly reduce truency because Headteacher or Administrators will know exactly where we are in order to keep us safe. In addition, it will also make sure we get to our lessons. I wish I had this hi-tec microchip in my school. That school is so lucky. The main reason for this is to make sure whether pupils are in available in a school site. Truthfully, I do not think its an invasion of privacy unless if you are in the toilet (of course not in toilets though). So overall, it's a great way of handling students, honest! The only disadvantage is that some pupils can throw these microchips away and make an excuse that "Oh, its in the washing machine". Funny, maybe not.

It's a bad idea. Sure, the thing could help ensure safety and put a weight off the global parents' heads, but what would happen if the jumper was lost, or if a pedophile/other got ahold of it? Not to mention the implications if collected data was lost, like seems to have been happening recently (Inland Revenue lost about 2,000,000 people's records in the last few months). It's sensitive information and we can't trust it to not get misplaced.

We of Newland School For Girls in Hull think that this is an obscene idea as it invades pupils privacy and rights. There should be more trust in parents and teachers as not all children are naughty and twag. A comment has been posted previously mentioning the fact that only the children that do truant would be bothered about this happening, but punishing children that don't have bad behaviour is wrong.

This is a rediculous idea, you are going to get many kids who will just cut their "tag" out and hide it in another kids pocket. it is a waste of time, money and effort when registers work just as well, as another person said, think about african people living in slums. teach the kids and help the kids that want to learn, that want a future rather than wasting the time on kids who wish to ruin their own lives. although it seems an effective idea, it just isnt worth it.

Today it's little chips in to keep your children safe, tomorrow it's identy cards, and soon we will live in a totally watched country, where privacy will be a forgotten concept and where the government will have full knowledge of where you are and what you are doing, soon they will be able to ban religion, homosexuality, politicaly minded people and then of course every one (depending on country) that isn't from that country. I also feel that there are other ways for teachers to find out inforamtion such as looking at the register. I think that this is an waste of money and a waste of electricty. The schools could be using the money on other things not on the micro-chips. In our school we just check on the brom com to see if some one is at school and if their not then their parents get a text. Our method is so much better that theirs ands its saves money and electricty. Next thimg you know they'll be putting mini microphones on our jumpers.

This is a ridiculous waste of money and equipment. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but isn't this the similar sort of tracking chips placed on certain released criminals? A waste of money, time, and really, schools shouldn't have such an authority over pupils. Students are there to learn, but this sounds like a prison sentence. Blazers don't last forever as well, many people wear them out or lose them. Tracking chips on students. I've never heard such rubbish in my life, and I've seen Labour and Tories have verbal-brawls.

This is yet another intrusive, expensive, impractical and illiberal idea, and it seems to me to be an confession of incompetence on the part of the authorities that the only way they can think to track wayward students is with hi-tech equipment. But it'll happen anyway-just like the ID card scheme for adults.

this is a horrendice idea its like being spied on 247 i would hate it besides people woulld just remove them also it definatly would not reduse truency as people would figgure out ways to fool them this idea sucks big time.

I think it sounds good to keep kids safe in school, but it also means that the kids may feel that they don't want their parents and teachers knowinh where they are at all times. Also, won't this be another mechanical machine, which means polluting the earth!!

This is a total outrage! This is most definately a step too far. It is a complete breach of our privacy. Next the government will be putting chips in our brain. Our countries turning into a massive big brother. I am going to go and cry now!

I think it is going a bit too afr to microchip students. It is an interesting scheme but there are many things that could go wrong. For the money it would cost I don't think it is worth it.

It's an invasion of privacy. If teachers need to know where students are, they look for them, invading privacy just for the location of a student is unjust, and pretty much morally wrong =l

i thinnk that this is an invasion of privacy, all im trying to say is that this sort of thing is good in a way but overall it has such a bad image, this will show thaat the school is not a safe place to even go to and would have to go this far just to find out about the students were either present or absent in fact i think that its already way over the fence for having such an idea of trying to have a great technology go to waste on such a petty thing like that. it makes it feels like you're being watched or stalked the whole time....it just aint right

what would happen if you left your blazer on the bus or in the cloakroom? teachers might think that you hadn't come to school or hadn't gone to lessons and then raise an alarm when actually you were there all the time.

I don't like the idea of this. I know that it is important for paretnts and teachers to no where we are but we should be trusted to go to lessons and not bunk off. I would feel like I was being monitored all the time and i might have a good reason why I was late to a lesson.
