Encourage independent learning by getting the students to try to find out for themselves how to do something rather than automatically relying on you to show them.

This section can be used to encourage students to learn about the key aspects of databases for themselves.

You could give them a task sheet which asks them to define key terms

Database exercise 1

This task asks students to read some recent news stories about the use of databases

They are asked to:

• Read a selection of news stories
• Write a short report discussing which answers a set of questions on the tasksheet

Database exercise 2

A paper based exercise which could be given to students to check their understanding of databases or as a piece of homework.

Students are presented with a small table of data about animals in a zoo. They are asked to use the data in the table to answer some questions.

Database exercise 3

A paper based exercise which could be given to students to check their understanding of databases or as a piece of homework.

Students are presented with a small table of data where the data has been coded. Students are asked to consider the usefulness of codes and to answer a set of questions based on the data.

Database exercise 4

A paper based exercise which could be given to students to check their understanding of databases or as a piece of homework.

Students are asked to identify the fields that would be needed in a school database about pupils. They are then asked to design the layout of an appropriate data capture form to collect this data.

Little Theatre Data Collection Form

This resource provides a data collection task suitable for both KS3 and KS4.

It has been designed so that the work can be done either on a PC or by hand - ideal for a cover lesson or when you want students to work away from the comptuer.

A sample data collection form has also been provided for your reference.

Cover lesson for unit 7.5

Jon Bridgeman of Finham Park School has kindly contributed a cover lesson for this unit.

Each lesson comes with a pupil worksheet and a guidance sheet for the teacher. The guidance sheet is designed to be used by the cover teacher and will explain how the students should approach the tasks. It also gives guidance on internet usage and SEN.

Please note that there may be references on the sheets to Jon's school network directory structure so you wil have to change these to suit your particular network and file system
