Motion Guide

An animation term.

The idea of a motion guide is to describe a line path, along which an object can travel.

For example in Flash, you can define a motion guide for a movie. The guide looks like a line drawn on the stage. The movie, which is attached to the guide will then move along the line as the Flash movie plays. The line itself is invisible.

You can even have motion guides in 3 dimensions. For example the cartoon development software "Toon Works" allows you to draw a guide not only in the X and Y direction but also in the Z direction. This makes the character appear to move in all three dimensions.
