Green Screen

A video or movie recording term.

A green screen is literally a green background placed behind some actors or props. The actors play out their roles, then, during video editing, the green background colour is removed from the scene and replaced with any scene the editor cares to use. The actors seem to be part of the new scene.

For example, imagine a scene being made for a sword fight on a pirate ship at sea. The actors have a sword fight in the safety of a studio in front of a green screen. Then during editing the green is replaced with a previously filmed scene of the ship at sea. Now as far as the audience is concerned, the actors seem to be on the ship.

Many special effects and fantasy films are made in this way.
