Disaster Planning

In an ICT context, this means the plans that a company puts in place to make sure their business can still run even if their critical IT systems fail.

For example, imagine a Building Society that has a Data Centre containing their mainframes. These mainframes hold all their mortgage and financial accounts - then a fire burns down the building!

The company needs to have a plan in place so that they know exactly what to do in what order so that they can recover their business with as little disruption as possible - this is disaster planning.

In the case of the Building Society example, it is most likely they have another set of mainframes somewhere else in the country that 'mirror' all the files in the data centre. This backup is brought online, while a new Data Centre is built.
