Protecting data: lesson idea

Put up a slide stating that students are the finance director of a company that is in financial trouble. The bank are threatening to close them down unless they can bring in a substantial amount of cash within the next 24 hours.

As Finance Director, you have decided that the only way to do that is to make a major special offer on their most popular product for a limited period only.

The problem is, your business rival knows you are in trouble and they are planning to beat your offer in two days from now, so you MUST get this offer posted to your clients TODAY before your rivals can send out their letter.

Put the text of the letter up and get them to type it up on the computers.

This should read

"We write to inform you that all Widgets are half price PROVIDED you buy them from our ONLINE shop between the hours of 9 and 5 today ONLY"

So they write that up.

When they have done that, you then tell them they must send it to all the customers in the Customer File List that you have placed on the network.

So, they have to open this file to look at it before using it in a mail merge.

Now, when they open Customer File List they will find nothing but a Smiley and the words, 'Congratulations, you have just been attacked by the Monster Virus who has eaten all your data! Go and sit back at your desk, because there is nothing more that you can do'

As soon as they discover that, they must come and sit down. When they are all there, discuss what has happened. They have had a virus attack that has eaten all their customer details.

Ask them what they think that means to the company that is in trouble, remembering they have to get this letter out right now. Ask them what they think they could do next. If they say, they get a back up, explain to them that the back up is on a disk that will take 24 hours to arrive and since it was done several months ago, it is likely be be very out of date.

Ask them how they could have protected their information and how they could prevent attacks like this in future. Above all, find out from them what they think they could do to avoid disruption in future, should they ever get attacked like this again.
