11. RFID Tags
Radio Frequency ID tags (RFID) are now regularly used on expensive or highly desirable products in the supermarket (e.g. Blu-Ray disks)
RFID tags are small tracking devices which can be used to tell the supermarket exactly where a product such as a DVD is at any time whilst in the shop.
They can be used to identify if the DVD has been put back on the wrong shelf or dumped in a different part of the shop by a customer who has changed their mind.
They can also be used to spot whether an item is being stolen. When a product with an RFID tag is scanned the tag is either removed or deactivated by the cashier. If someone tries to steal an item containing an active RFID tag it can set off an alarm when they try to exit the shop.
