9. Conclusion

This section has given you a whistle-top tour of computer systems in the modern world. The basic conclusion is that computer systems are now everywhere including:

  • at home
  • at work
  • in offices, shops, banks and other large organisations
  • in airports, train stations and ferry ports
  • the military
  • entertainment such as cinemas, theatres and concert venues

And these computer systems are mostly invisible. People take their presence for granted, they are simply there to provide some service.

There are some terms beginning to be used for this phenomenon - 'ambient computing' or 'ubiquitous computing'
