1. Introduction

In the early days of the simple local food store, it was enough to have a paper ledger to keep track of stocks and sales and to pop down to the local cash-and-carry when you needed to fill up the shelves.

But now, with the rise of the mega supermarket chains, it is no longer possible to keep track of stocks and sales without the help of sophisticated computer systems.
