In the past, if you wanted something from abroad, you would have to either telephone the company or order from their catalogue and then send a cheque.

It could take a couple of weeks for the cheque to arrive, the company would then want to cash the cheque before sending you your goods. So, from ordering to receiving your goods, there could be over a month's delay.

With electronic payment, the company recieves the money almost instantly and your goods are shipped to you, usually the same day.
