Common reasons for having a web site are to present ideas , to entertain or to provide information and services for other people. Much like a book or newspaper does.

You can classify web sites according to their purpose. These include

People create this type of site for many reasons. Such as

  • Sharing stories and pictures with friends and family
  • Showing a holiday or adventure
  • Use it to try out web design ideas
Business  

Created by a company or business

  • To inform customers of their latest products.
  • Sometimes used to recruit new staff
  • Company news and events
  • Download Manuals and Brochures
E-Commerce  

This type of site is dedicated to selling goods and services directly over the Internet. An e-commerce site includes

  • A number of things for sale
  • A "shopping cart" to select items
  • A payment method such as credit card.
Educational  

Dedicated to educate and inform people For example

  • On-line encyclopaedias
  • On-line training courses
  • On-line GCSE, KS3 and so on.
News and Entertainment  

These kinds of sites let their viewers know of the latest facts (and gossip)

  • Serious news sites
  • Sports sites
  • Celebrity sites

And so on.

There are millons of web sites on the internet, so there are web site dedicated to almost every topic you can think of. In dozens of languages!
