Worksheet 2

A paper based exercise which could be given to students to check their understanding of databases or as a piece of homework.

Students are presented with a small table of data about animals in a zoo. They are asked to use the data in the table to answer some questions.

A paper based exercise which could be given to students to check their understanding of databases or as a piece of homework.

Students are asked to identify the fields that would be needed in a school database about pupils. They are then asked to design the layout of an appropriate data capture form to collect this data.

Students are presented with a small table of data where the data has been coded. Students are asked to consider the usefulness of codes and to answer a set of questions based on the data.

Database exercise

Here is an Access database based on cars. It contains 70 records.

There is an accompanying question sheet which will enable you to check whether students understand datatypes, validation rules and how to write a query in order to extract information from a database.

Access Walkthrough - 3-4 lessons

This is a walkthrough that will take students right from the basics of creating a database

  • choosing datatypes
  • choosing field sizes
  • creating drop down boxes
  • using validation
  • writing queries
  • writing reports
  • creating mail merged letters.

The theme is based on a fashion show. It could be adapted for another topic to suit your own class requirements.

This would take most students approximately three to four lessons to work through.
