7. 3D CAD

At the beginning, only 2D computer aided design packages were available. This is because computers at that time were simply not powerful enough to work in all three dimensions at once.

A 3 dimensional CAD application works with height, width and depth all at the same time. This means it can deal with 'solid' objects on the screen.

The picture below shows a 3D-CAD application with a racing car design on the screen. It look solid doesn't it.
