When the field names are entered a data type is automatically assigned to each. This is the text data type. This allows you to enter letters, numbers and symbols.
Not all data types should be text, sometimes there is a better option

| Text | This allows you to store letters, numbers and symbols e.g. CV46 7TR |
| Memo | is allows you to add a comment or a paragraph of text e.g. “The restaurant was superb. The décor was pleasing and the ambience was relaxed and inviting. We thoroughly enjoyed choosing our food from a large selection of dishes on the menu” |
| Number | This allows you to only enter numbers, either whole or decimal e.g. 7, 200, 1.25 |
| Date/Time | This is used when dates or times of the day are recorded. e.g. date of birth |
| Currency | This is used when recording money. It will display the currency symbol that you choose e.g. £, $ It can also be formatted to have 2 decimal places if required |
| Autonumber | This data type automatically adds the next sequential number e.g. Customer ID 01, Customer ID 02, Customer ID 03 |
| Yes/No | This is used when there are only two options e.g. Yes/No, On/Off, True/False |
| OLE Object | This is used to store inserted objects for example photographs, graphs, documents |
| Hyperlink | This stores a web address |
