10. Version Numbers

version numberOnce a new system has been developed or an application released, you would think that was the end of the story and that the developers would move onto the next project.

Well yes, some of them will. However as people get to use the system for real they are bound to find some bugs that were overlooked during the testing phase. They will probably also have some suggestions for how things could be further improved.

A team of developers will continue to work on the system and continue to make improvements. Once changes have been made, the updated software will be given a new version number.

For example, when the software is first released it could be called 'Software abc V.1'. When some changes have been made, it might then be called 'Software abc V1.1', and the next set of changes 'Software abc V1.2' and so on.

You can usually check the version number of the software by going to the 'Help' menu and looking at the 'about' option.
