Applications software can be split up into specific categories. Have a look at the table below to familiarise yourself with some of them:

| Database | Microsoft Access | Storing data for example all of the products for sale in a shop |
| Desktop Publishing | Microsoft Publisher | Creating leaflets, catalogues and posters |
| Web Design | Dreamweaver; FrontPage | Developing a web site or web pages |
| Web Browser | Internet Explorer; Firefox; Netscape | Viewing web pages |
| Image Editing | Photoshop; Paintshop Pro | Stretching, shrinking, recolouring images |
| Accounting | Sage; Quicken | Keeping track of money coming into and out of a business |
