Identifying parts of the computer

This task gives students a picture of a computer. They are asked to identify the main pieces of hardware.

There is also a gapfil exercise for them to complete.

This task is supplied with a set of answers

Design a mobile phone

This task asks students to think about the features used onmobile phones and then to design their own 'mobile phone of the future'

Design a new set of tool buttons for a package

This task asks students to consider the tool buttons used in popular software and then come up with their own design for an improved set.

Health and Safety

Students are asked to identify the health and safety risks in a picture.

They are then asked to design a poster for Year 7, to explain to them the rules for working safely in a computer room.

Dictionary Task

Students are asked to compile a dictionary of ICT terms.

The terms given can be changed to match projects which they are currently working on.

Sources of Information

Students are asked to think about the different resources which they can use to find information.

They are asked to list the advantages and disadvantages of each resource.

If students are doing this task by hand, you may wish to make the table rows larger to enable them to write more into each section.

Houses in the future

Students are asked to consider how future developments in technology will affect the gadgets we have in our homes and the way we live.

Project Cyborg

Students are asked to undertake some research about the reality of cyborgs and write a report about their findings.

They are provided with some links to help them get started.

Design a theme park ride

Students are asked to investigate theme park rides and then design their own. If no computers are available, this part could be missed out.

The key to this exercise is for them to consider where the sensors might be on the ride and what type of sensors would be suitable.

Design an Eye Toy

This task explains what an 'eye toy' is (although most students will probably know).

They are asked to design their own version of one.

Invent your own computer game

Students are asked to think about designing a new computer game.

They are given a template to help them organise their thoughts and ideas.

Find the ICT term

Students are asked to use the online glossary at teach-ict. They randomly choose 10 descriptions for words contained in the glossary. Once they have done this, they give their definitions to their partner who has to try to identify the ICT term.
