3. Automatic transitions in a presentation

In this case there is no human interaction with the presentation. It simply moves from one slide to another in a pre-defined way.

The timing of each slide is fixed by the original author, for example, they might have set each slide to display for 30 seconds before moving to the next one in the presentation.

The entire presentation may be set up to loop continuously so that as soon as it reaches the final slide, it will loop back to the first slide and continue to show them again.

Automatic presentations are good for showing a fixed amount of information, for instance maybe an estate agent has a presentation loop running showing houses for sale, one after another.

Another application is in public information kiosks where perhaps a catalogue of restaurants in the area are shown or places of interest for tourists to visit.

Automatic slides are effective when the content of each slide is completely independent from any other slide, for instance in the example of the estate agent it does not really matter when in the presentation a customer starts to look at it.

Benefits of automatic transitions Problems of automatic transitions
Can be left to show slides continuously by looping the presentation Automatic slide transitions are no good if human interaction is required.
Does not need anyone to advance the presentation They are also a poor choice if you need to see a previous slide to make sense of the current one.
Timings are allocated to each slide so they show for a pre-defined period of time People take longer or shorter than one another to digest the information, so fixed slide timing is a poor option
No good for non-linear presentations where the user can choose which is the next slide they want to see
If a presenter is present, they would not be able to expand on a point on the slide or stop to answer questions.
Slides may move too quickly or slowly
If you miss a slide, you have to wait for it to 'come round' again
The audience may not wish to see all of the presentation
