4. Graphics libraries for network design

Unlike the kitchen and map application, a network design does not particularily care about physical dimensions. The important thing is to show standard computer network elements and how they are connected to one another. Engineers can then install the actual system based on the design.

Electronic engineers use the same method to design circuits. There are standard elements for resistor, transistors, capacitors and so on. So this kind of design is 'symbolic'. It describes an abstract design.

For instance, a typical network would have one or more servers connected to a number of client terminals. In-between there will be hubs, routers and switches in place. There will be network cables both copper and maybe optical joining them together.

The graphic library will contain a standard set of symbols for server, client, cable, router and so on. The designer will drag each element into the design. They are connected together on-screen. Each element can be dragged around the screen and the joining cables will remain connected.

Advantages of graphics libraries for network designs
They use a standard set of computer symbols
The symbols can easily be resized
Symbols can be dragged around and yet still remain connected.
