4. Weather modelling

When you watch the weather forecast on T.V. you will see a prediction about what they think the weather will be like later in the day and tomorrow.

You may see images of clouds and patches of rain over different areas of the country.  They will show you how the clouds and rain will move over time.

This hasn’t actually happened yet.  They are predicting what will happen in the future. 

They are able to do this by using a computer model.

The model stores millions of pieces of data about what actually happened to the weather in the past.

When data is entered into the model about current temperatures, wind speed, cloud formations etc. the model can calculate what is likely to happen based on all of the data stored about what actually did happen in the past.
