8. Videos

In the context of the OCR syllabus, the term 'video' is taken to mean that the information is being shown as a moving image, the video would most likely include sound and perhaps some animation. Of course, if you are viewing online, then you need the right 'media player' to view the video e.g. QuickTime, Window Media Player, Real Player etc.

If you are offline, then VHS tape, DVD or video recorder is the most likely method.

Videos are a powerful method of communicating information because they bring together a variety of the representation methods which we have already examined. They can contain sound, images and text which are combined to pass on the information in an informative and often entertaining way.

Videos have long been used by companies to train their staff, perhaps introducing them to company policies or to teach them how to perform a new skill. They might also be used to communicate information to staff/shareholders about how the company is performing and plans for the future.

Schools and colleges make use of video to educate students and provide information about specific topics.

Video Podcasts

These are short video clips which can be downloaded from the web and viewed either online or stored for offline viewing.

File sharing sites have resulted in the increasing popularity of this technology and people from all over the world now share information with one another by uploading video podcasts to websites.

The BBC news now publishes many of its news stories in a video podcast format. People are able to watch news snippets from their computers or hand-held mobile devices.
