5. Online Navigation

Another very popular way of getting directions is to use a free online mapping service. For instance Google Maps.

The service is paid for by targeted adverts on the mapping page.

You enter your starting location such as post code or address, then enter the destination. It will then advice you of the journey.

A typical route plan is shown above. Showing way point, time and distance information.

Some services can offer a satellite image of the area to help related the graphical map to the physical terrain.

An estimate of the cost of fuel may be provided.

There may be photographs available of the interesting points along the way.

They may offer webcam images of certain way points.

It may be possible to zoom right down to the street level then use mouse or keyboard to 'walk' along the road e.g. Google Streetview.
