6. Mobile ADSL

Whilst cable and telephone wires are excellent choices if you are in a fixed location, they are no good if you are on the move.

Another method of connecting to the internet is through the mobile phone network. The technology is called '3G' or '4G' (there is 5G being developed).

3G Wireless broadband is asymmetric and in theory offers 14.4 Mbps download speed and 5.8 Mbps upload speeds.

However this very much depends on the strength of the mobile signal at your location.

Do not confuse this with WiFi which is a high speed radio connection to a nearby standard ADSL modem.

To make a connection you can use an USB cable from the laptop to the 3G mobile phone. An alternative is to use a 'wireless dongle' attached to the USB port. This is actually an ADSL modem connecting directly to the mobile phone company mast.
