2. The Meaning of Information

Since information = data + context + meaning

We have already discussed Data and that it needs a framework in which to make sense i.e. if the data has a context, you know that it represents something you wish to record.

e.g. the number "E54 3UAE" could represent a car registration number. So you know in this case that  data set is a collection of car registration numbers

But what does the data set mean?

For example the data set could be all the cars currently parked in the local multi-storey car park.

Or it could be a list of all the cars that are more than 10 years old.

So meaning is assigned to data by someone who wants to use it to create information.
