2. Faster CPU

A motherboard is designed for a specific family of CPUs for instance it may be designed for the Intel CORE processors or it might be designed for the ARM family of processors and they are not interchangeable.

However, processors are often designed as a family, ranging from a cheap (but low performance) version to an expensive (but high performance) version. For example, the diagram below is showing a family of processors where 'A' is cheap but low performance whilst 'D' is expensive but high performance.

In this way the customer can decide on the one that meets their cost/performance.

To improve performance it may be possible to just drop in a higher performing CPU into the motherboard. This will depend of course if the motherboard was designed for this.
